Spring has sprung!

(The basilica down the street.)

I have been wanting to make the proclamation but I was too scared I would jinx it. Here goes nothing...

Spring has sprung!

The air is warmer and the streets are almost completely free of snow! Please let this be the beginning of a transformation to a warmer time. A time of blossoms and green grass and bare arms. I loved the snow storms, but their time has passed. Oh, how this winter has made me long for spring.

Two things

1) I'm a klutz. I am not proud of this, but I feel like admitting it makes it less embarrassing.
I was starting to think I outgrew it. I have not. In the past 24 hours, I dumped an entire glass of water on David's pile of bills, closed my finger in a door, dropped my papers twice while leaving campus, stepped on David's ankle while getting into bed, and tripped over a dog. I spent time last night trying to convince David that I actually am coordinated. That leads me to number 2.

2) Snowy weather makes people nice.
The first time I dropped my papers, a women ran and pinned them down with her foot so they wouldn't fly away. The second time (about 30 seconds later), a little girl picked them up and handed them to me. Once I started walking again, a woman said, "Be careful. The ground is icy."
After the blizzards, we were trying to parallel park in a snow-covered spot. A couple of guys drove by in a truck, and David and I both commented that they had mean looks on their faces. After they parked, they walked over and offered to push our sweet/weak little Honda over a snow mound. Turns out they weren't mean after all! (Yes, we felt bad for being judgmental.) I waved an apology to another man waiting for us to park, and he smiled nicely. Once we were parked and out of the car, he drove by and said, "Be careful, it's slippery out here!"
And finally, a few days ago, we were parking and a boy walked over to remove a ball of snow that was blocking our tire.
Are they being nice because they can tell this snow/ice thing is new for us? Do we look that out of place?

Snow days

Being snowed in (for 6 whole days!) isn't so bad when you get to be with this dude. And you have electricity. Oh, and good food. And blankets. And movies. And you pretend you don't have any schoolwork.

Snow days all week= Winter Break Round II.

Snowmageddon

One day, nothing. And the next, everything has been iced with white frosting.

When the snow stopped falling yesterday, we joined a crowd of people and dogs for play time by the monument. Looking up and down the streets you could see groups of people walking down the middle, eager to see what the snow had done. These are the same streets that are usually packed with honking cars, construction, and traffic. The snow transformed them into peaceful streets of sparkling white.

I feel really lucky that we get to be in Baltimore for record-breaking snowfall. First snow day of my life today, and another storm is coming in tomorrow.

From 75 to 15 degrees

After a few weeks of family, friends, food, Christmas, sunshine and chaos, we are back in Baltimore. It was great to hug those we love and visit our old favorite spots (more posts to come), and it was refreshing to forget about school for a while. Seriously, I finished finals and then immediately forgot about school. I was impressed with myself.

We are glad to be back, and we are glad that we are glad to be back. It is a good feeling to want to return to your home despite that home being new and very, very different.

And very, very cold.

Baltimore in the snow

Newspapers say this was the biggest December storm since record-keeping started in 1883. I really feel lucky.

The square is like Narnia, complete with lion statues and lamp posts!

Let it snow!

(Golfing in the middle of our street.)

Woke up this morning to a beautiful Winter Wonderland! I've never seen anything like this. They say it is the biggest storm the mid-Atlantic has seen in decades. We could not leave our house all day, except to walk next door for some chicken wings. Even that felt like an adventure.

It really feels like Christmas here.
California, the East Coast wins on this one.

Lighting of the monument

In Baltimore, Christmas season begins with the lighting of the Washington Monument, the first monument built in honor of George Washington.

And to top it off, we're expecting snow this weekend! I see little flurries outside the window, and my heart is flurrying too. Cheesy, I know, but I'm not exactly familiar with a winter full of snow. Hopefully it sticks! That's what us California people say, because it never sticks. Ha ha.

I feel robbed

Dear California,

The past few days it's been in the mid-40s. It is October, and I'm already wearing my warmest clothes. I have come to the conclusion that you have been robbing me of seasons for the majority of my life. Especially you, SLO, with your January beach days and your 70 degrees all year round. You are especially to blame. You've made me soft, and I need this year to toughen up again. Then, then when I come back to you again I will better appreciate you because I've known different. I've known snow and storms and cold, cold wind. Then, I will love you even more.

Sincerely,
Lindsay
